General Manager

About the role

To ensure the efficient and cost effective management of all warehousing and distribution operations and associated activities.  The achievement and maintenance of pre-defined standards of service at the lowest sustainable costs and within budgetary parameters.  As a member of the Distribution Management team to contribute to the strategic plans and support improvements in efficiency and effectiveness of the operation.

There is a requirement to travel to other sites on occasions which may require overnight stay.

As this is a seven days operation there will be a requirement for occasional weekends and night working to meet the needs of the business.

Role Responsibility

Ensure that the depot stockholding facilities are created to maximise depot distribution capacity.

Development of people, to ensure the continued performance and growth of the business

Accountable for ensuring any new initiatives are implemented and achieved in accordance with company guidelines.


Prepare, manage and control RSC capital and revenue budget.  To ensure that the most cost effective methods of operations are used whilst achieving the level of service to stores as agreed with the client.

Ensure that the RSC is adequately staffed to receive stock and manage the despatch to stores, meeting the high quality standards demanded by the business.

Ability to manage stocktakes and audits within the agreed deadlines

To monitor all on-site contracts, to ensure they provide a high quality service in a cost effective manner and within budget.

To monitor a full site security operation to ensure adequate protection of property, equipment, and stock.


Keep abreast of changes in legislation and innovations in the distribution industry to maintain competitiveness

Budget achieved in all the areas responsible for – including labour costs
Site security maintained and stock loss management

The achievement of specified customer service levels meeting quality of output including order fill, stock presentation and timeliness of delivery

Ensuring that the operation of the RSC confirms to all budgetary, service, security, health and safety and other legal requirements, including licensing and insurance specifically as the relate to all legislation

The maintenance of good industrial relations and an effective and motivated workforce throughout the RSC through effective team, building, communications and staff participation in operational and process improvements

Maintaining high standards of behaviour

Maintaining accuracy and integrity of inventory

Monitoring and controlling assets

Ensuring maintenance and upkeep of the fabric of the RSC and all equipment

Servicing the annual sales plan within agreed fixed and variable cost budgetary parameters measured by deliver company targets profit margins

Achieve given KPI’s

Ensure that administration facilities are available to meet the requirements of the site

To meet/improve on agreed quality standards through effective and efficient utilisation of labour and machinery

Manage and lead the team to ensure that they have the skill sets, resources and support needed to deliver in their role and achieve objectives, and that they operate in a manner consistent with the ethos and values of the organisation.

Train and develop employees to ensure that they are equipped to perform their duties effectively and in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and company procedure

The ongoing development and training of an effective and motivated management team.

The management of all operations on a daily, period and annual basis to achieve the smooth and efficient running of the RSC.

Ensure appropriate Personal Development Reviews (PDR’s) development and succession management systems are operating effectively to develop and retain the requisite skilled resources to meet current and future business needs

Set team objectives & targets and monitor & feedback on performance on an ongoing basis.

Lead the team by example: ensuring effective communication, support and recognition structures and practices are in place

Identify, develop and retain talent

You will need

GCSE Maths and English grade C or above (or equivalent)

Previous Depot management experience

Logistics or Supply Chain experience
